The new public space aims to reconnect the historic center of the small town of Rivarolo Canavese with its east-west route. This relationship between the new public space, the nearby road and the Old town imposes an urban character to the project, turning it into a gateway to the city.
Starting from these premises a long platform roof that stands parallel to the main axis defines the main limit of the space. The platform roof accommodates a large number of activities, chess tables, ping-pong tables, collective seats, benches, long tables for festivals and a kiosk in its central part. Another square platform roof, in close dialogue with the first, supported by four concrete pillars it’s placed at the end of the central perspective of the public space. Its shape and size allows indeed various combinations of layouts and activities that needs greater spaces and cannot be hosted underneath the smaller one. When unused this big element also work as a monument or gateway to the old town, together with the long portico. The small semicircular square in the corner helps to reconnect the new intervention with the context by ideally extending the churchyard in front of it towards the new public space. In this small and more human related square, a fountain obtained from a large stone and a big Oak tree are placed. A large concrete seat, shaded by a row of trees, defines the southern side, running along the entire length of the lot, dividing it by the parking area. In the plan organization of the aforementioned elements, a large central void has been intentionally maintained.
The project is referred to the italian tradition of urban shelters, church parvise and fountains located under trees shade.
