Europan 13. Town Planning, Vision strategy.1st prize. Leeuwarden, NL
Like many other cities in the Netherlands, and more generally in Europe, the city of Leeuwarden is undergoing a process of progressively losing its attractiveness in favor of bigger centers that offer a more diverse job market and equally varied leisure opportunities. These conditions trigger the migration of entire sectors of the community, especially the younger generations, inducing the aging of the population and a progressive shrinking of the city. The proposal use a bottom-up strategy capable of meeting the demands of the younger generations and the reactivation of the city center. By defining new forms for the occupation of the vacant spaces, we could combine their needs in terms of jobs and housing with those of the property owners, reversing the migration trend and producing the conditions for an endogenous regeneration of the downtown area.
In a lively center, the shops will have a market once again, and the tourists will find a beautiful place to visit.
