We need to talk – Lecture at the Milano Archweek

“We need to talk” is a series of lectures and talks focused on the confrontation between different generations of architects. 50 years after the XIV Triennale di Milano was closed and occupied, a group of guests reflect on how new emerging figures, that often go beyond the classic borders of the practice, can lead the profession towards a faster evolution of the discourses around the definition of the human habitat.

We need to talk is curated by Parasite 2.0 and Milano Architecture Week, host by Triennale di Milano.

On a daily basis – Mantova Architettura 2018

The research project On a daily basis has been showed at Mantova Architettura 2018, in the formal Church of San Cristoforo, as part of the program LE CITTA’ NARRATE.

On a daily basis offers a selection of buildings and cityscapes that are part of the daily unfolding of the life of the city. This architectures shown in the images are as heavily used and frequented as unknown, often even anonimous – namely impossible to link directly to a defined author. By collecting pictures of these places, On a daily basis designs an alternative topography of the city, made of ordinary artifacts rather than legitimated and authorial elements. The result reveals a rich and multifaceted Milan and shows its silent, unexpected beauty.

It’s part of a larger series of events that the hostel is promoting, aiming to become a new cultural pole for the city. The project conciliates the needs of a young couple with the spatial features of the house, built in the late 1960s, no longer responding to today’s ways of living. A huge bookshelf is the backbone of the project and runs for all the length of the apartment and designed in order to accommodate various functions including the owner’s studio, which is embedded into it.

Notary’s office

Works for the notary’s office just started.

The project redefine and adapt a two floor apartment of 100 sqmt into an office for a notary. Given the restricted budget the intervention is focused mainly on the layout, consisting of a sequence of specialized rooms such as the waiting room, the administrative office and the stanza stipula, the core of the office, where the notary works essentially. The upper floor is used as office for apprentices and as an archive. Doors, thresholds, walls and corridors are used in order to create a floorplan that could work as a “choreography” to be followed by employees, guests and the client himself. The  space is shaped in order to manage the rigid and strongly hierarchical character of this type of offices.

Asnada exibithion

Setup and production for the exhibition “Alberi e Animali”. Milan, ITA

casatibuonsante architects coordinates the setup of an exibithion in the courtyard of an old farmhouse located in the north suburbs of Milan and run by the cultural association Asnada. The intent was to show the result of a three months long laboratory were people with different cultures and background were invited to confront with each other, using a series of drawings produced through the use of serigraphy. Asnada develop research and action on integration and coexistence, looking at the school as the privileged place where to support mutual knowledge and the construction of familiar relationships. At the center of their interest there’s the language, intended as a tool for personal and social transformation.

“ What is a department store? What is its role in different urban contexts? How has the digital revolution affected the practice and particularities of its shopping environment? There is no precise answer to such questions as there is no way to reduce the notion of “department store” to a single statement. A department store is rather a diverse collection of values and identities, expressing the history of the city it belongs to. More than a place, a department store is an open and adaptable cultural canvas of its location, whether it be London, Paris, New York, Tokyo or Milan.”

Unbuilt Rome

Collective exhibition at Campo. Rome, ITA

“The city is the material presence of the built environment as much as the accumulation of lost, destroyed or imaginary elements, which not anymore or never became parts of reality. All of these elements, physical or immaterial, constitute a collective cultural capital of a place and contribute to shape its diffused mentality. The project Unbuilt Rome explores this idea of the city as a stratification of built facts and drawn thoughts, through a shared research that examines a series of projects designed for Rome and never realized.”

Collective exhibition Re-Constructivist Architecture, Ierimoni Galley. New York, USA.

“The exhibition will feature the work of thirteen international emerging architecture firms, aiming to portrait a generation of architects born in the ‘80s: a countertrend that tries to recover a debate lost years ago and obstructed by a cumbersome star system. Their theoretical, critical and historical approach attempts to rediscover a thoughtful dimension behind the architectural subject. Each firm will present a residential project in the Roman countryside, a design exercise meant as a typological investigation, or, more generally, as a meditation on the autonomy of the architectural discipline.”

Act of Resistence

Lecture at the Academy of Architecture. Mendrisio, CH

Invited by OSA:  “ an association of students which wishes for multiple opinions. OSA is a tool through which the students open a debate on architecture in its widest form. During the current semester OSA will take into account the issue of RESISTANCE. To talk about Resistance in architecture one has to be aware of the following fact: there is not a singular way in which architecture resists. In first place it has to resist itself. In the era of spectacle and acceleration, what are the threats of an architect? Does the architect resist? What does the architect resist to? What does it mean to resist? The following pamphlet does not dare to answer these questions; we see this as a starting point, a stream of consciousness of the redaction, an introduction to the issues we would like to face with our guests. “

Generazione: a call from Rome

Lecture at Casa dell’Architettura, Rome, ITA

Rome is an off-centre metropolis, out of an orthodox perception of time, where every single past becomes present in a continuous state of monumental contemporariness. Continuity and crisis share the same space: ancient brick walls are flanked by the anonymous “palazzine” complex of the latest years and among these the everyday madness of the city: ceaseless traffic, tourists blinded by the scorching sun, the pink roman dust settling on monuments, as Ludovico Quaroni would say. And again: traditions and languages, researches and cliches, cultures and avant-gardes, the most sacred and the vilest profane, all compose a living postcard with an inimitable capacity for self-renewal.Is there a language, a framework, to rebuild? A tradition to rethread? In an age of multiplication of images and sources of inspiration, is there something still to explore in the Roman landscape? Are those “postcards from Rome” still able to produce emotion, to inspire a future action?

Redrawing the Theory / Redrawing the House

Publication on the exhibition catalogue, Milan, ITA

Today, we talk again about the necessity to re-evaluate the theory within the contemporary architectural debate. It is a necessity to re-collocate the architect in the middle of various issues, in an epoch of big urgencies and transformations of the urban and rural life, from the scale of the city, to the domestic environment. In very complex historical times, the architect sought refuge “into” the paper, using the drawing as a tool to spread his theories and to build a theoretical “skeleton” for the new practice. Can the drawing make us reason again on the conceptual and political potential of architecture? A publication containing the essays of the four studios invited to the exhibition and the results of the Call for Images presented at the opening day.

The Kabinet – The Huur

Guest tutor for the course, at the Frisian Design Factory, Leeuwarden, NL

Leeuwarden is a beautiful city which doesn’t need anything else than the definition of an approach able to combine the promotion of the city center and the involvement of the citizens into this process. Through a careful investigation of the current living condition, the course invite the students to rethink and develope a bottom-up strategy which, starting from the problems related to the depopulation process of the center, will be able to reactivate the urban core. Only reviving the center, the shops will have a market, the services will have users, the tourists a context to visit.
In a city which is shrinking there is definitely no need to built new dwellings. The vacancies are a resource to define new ways to inhabit and work. The models offered by the sharing economy clearly define an alternative and more resilient pattern for the requalification of these areas. The sharing of the space is a useful tool to create the condition for start-ups, co-workings, and other programs.

Ganzfeld – Ambienti di resistenza per l’individuo sociale

Collective exhibition Redrawing the Teory / Redrawing the House, Villa Vertua Masolo. Milan, ITA

“ If for the Modern Movement the house had been a central architectural matter in order to envision a new society, can the house be again the element which allows the practice to evolve? While strong social and technological changes are altering our way to look at the domestic life, the house project doesn’t evolve. In an era of huge openness and connection, in which everything seems to be shared into the data rush or become smart because of the tecno-fetishist mania, the house seems to remain the last and only place of freedom defined by four walls, where our own utopia can come alive”

Anamorphosis

Work exibithed at the Baltic Pavillion. 15th International Architecture Exhibition. Biennale di Venezia. Venice, ITA

“There are transformative efforts at play which are reprogramming an inert region beyond the delineations of separate nation-states. The Baltic Pavilion intends to explore the built environment of the Baltic States as a shared space of ideas. This exhibition and a series of related events presents a cross-section of Baltic space. In light of the Anthropocene, a new geological epoch, the developments in this region will unfold as a non-linear stratigraphy.”

M.U.R.O.

Work commissioned by Venice Pavillion. 15th International Architecture Exhibition. Biennale di Venezia. Venice, ITA

There are places that man has exploited to the point of rendering them inhospitable territories. Anecumenical places and peripheral spaces where the project is driven not by desire but by the absence of resistance and where the human presence is not only superfluous but alien. Porto Marghera is a space governed by machines whose ever-growing autonomy, combined with the gradual deterioration of the production plants, led to a progressive and irreversible depopulation of the area. Porto Marghera tells the story of all those landscapes that are sacrificed on the altar of progress because other landscapes can shine with their beauty and boast of their uncontaminated purity.  In a deliberate abandonment the project proposes a large exclusion zone where nature is left free to proliferate and human activity is confined to discontinuous productive islands that survive in the new post-human ecosystem.

Digital dialogue. Architects after 2008

Contribution to the virtual roundtable for Aformal Academy, Shenzhen Biennale. Shenzen, CN

“ Moment of crisis have always represented the starting point of important cultural, social, political and economical transformations. The scarcity of resources has deeply influenced the architectural discipline and the approach of many young firms – which were born after 2008 ‐towards it. This approach has involved also the “classic” career of the neo‐graduated architects: instead of running after long internships in various offices scattered all over the world, most of these young architects have tried to give birth to new research and architecture collectives. “

Te Huur

Europan 13. Town Planning, Vision strategy.1st prize. Leeuwarden, NL

Like many other cities in the Netherlands, and more generally in Europe, the city of Leeuwarden is undergoing a process of progressively losing its attractiveness in favor of bigger centers that offer a more diverse job market and equally varied leisure opportunities. These conditions trigger the migration of entire sectors of the community, especially the younger generations, inducing the aging of the population and a progressive shrinking of the city. The proposal use a bottom-up strategy capable of meeting the demands of the younger generations and the reactivation of the city center. By defining new forms for the occupation of the vacant spaces, we could combine their needs in terms of jobs and housing with those of the property owners, reversing the migration trend and producing the conditions for an endogenous regeneration of the downtown area.
In a lively center, the shops will have a market once again, and the tourists will find a beautiful place to visit.

The aim of the exhibition is to stimulate a debate among the same architectural firms, investigating which are the connection or severance elements between generations , different formations, geographical origins and how those differences can influence the design approach. If, therefore, still makes sense to speak of “architectural manifesto” in a globalized cultural scene.

Nuovo carcere Milano

Fair pavillion refurbishment proposal. Special mention. Fondazione Fiera . Milan, ITA

Despite the proposal to transform the two pavilions of the Fiera Milano City into a jail could seem utopian and provocative, the idea originates from absolutely pragmatic considerations. According to EU regulations, a prisoner must have 7 square meters minimum per cell. Still according to EU regulations, a pig must have at least 6. The San Vittore Prison in Milan is totally unsuitable to absorb the contemporary prison population. A building so obsolete and crumbling that it would be economically convenient to demolish and rebuild it instead of renovating it. Our hypothesis is to relocate the old jail inside the fair. In this way, the total prisoner capacity will be increased significantly, solving the space/cell necessity and freeing up a building, even if collapsing, whose land could still guarantee a high rent value if sold through development rights.
