Currently the world’s population is mostly citizens. The continuous growth of our cities causes an inevitable reduction of the agricultural fields, necessary for the sustenance of the metropolitan society itself. Therefore, it is crucial to reflect on the relationship between the city and the countryside, where the campaign contributes to the construction of buon governo lorenzettiano.
The term Openfield indicates a precise type of organization of the agricultural landscape where the lands are kept without fences, the decisions on the individual parcels are taken collectively and the harvest redistributed proportionally. Openfield suggests new ways of coexistence in which agriculture is understood as a productive, ecological and social infrastructure: we cultivate public space together.
Rogoredo suburbs has an important role in Milano as a link between the centre of Milan and its agricultural periphery. With the metro line, highways proximity and railway Rogoredo accommodate city and national flows towards Milano and Italy. The proximity of Parco Sud (agricultural park) and cycle-pedestrian connection with Chiaravalle Abbey suggest a potential reconnection between the city and Lombardi’s agricultural landscape.
The ground floor is designed as a common place for all inhabitants. It is built through a continuous sequence of public spaces with different privacy’s degrees, welcoming a complex functional program: spaces for agriculture, sports, recreational activities and co-working.
The square is the main place for economic and social activities with bars, restaurants, a gym and workings spaces.
Buildings create a series of courtyards that act as thresholds and manage the delicate transition between domestic and urban space. The entire proposal is developed imagining spaces of suitable dimensions to increase the sense of belonging and encouraging the appropriation of the public space by all citizen.
The project deal with contemporary issues promoting a social mixitè and a collective use of public space within a less obvious interpretation of the concept of co-housing, where common spaces are not grouped exclusively inside buildings but they are distributed in the neighbourhood on the ground level within a broader reasoning about urban life in metropolis.
We designed homes taking into consideration difficulties, needs and aspirations of a generation that, for better or for worse we represent ourselves.
Designed Buildings share the same flexibility of spaces. Each home has the possibility to reduce its living area to a single room, always greater than minimum standards, allocating the other rooms to bedrooms in order to adapt any changes in inhabitants’ needs.
The project has the ambition to rethink housing as a production site, through creative industries and micro-agriculture, following the desire to create a relationship between city and countryside.
