The project proposed for San Cristoforo railway yard is a sober one. The impressive, unique, striking gesture has been refused a priori. Is instead preferred to define the project through the composition of smaller objects, whose scale recalls the one of the existing ones along the canal, making those elements more recognizable as parts of the city. This lack of spectacularization, this sobriety, is however a typical feature of the neighborhoods that will be link by the project. What this proposal wants to reach is a balanced solution. The new structure allows an efficient connection, thanks to two secondary ramps, two bridges and a circular structure in the middle, encouraging a sustainable mobility and increasing the opportunities to cross the area. The two linear bridges are design with metal reticular structures. This structural model is used to represents past imaginary of this part of the city. Reticular structures recalls indeed the eighteenth and nineteenth’s industrial landscape, a type of landscape that defines not only the San Cristoforo’s neighbourhood but the entire city of Milan and, more in general, the entire region of Lombardy. The core of the intervention is the circular structure, an element both unusual and recognizable, which defines a new access to the linear park of the M4 metropolitan railway station. On one side the system is connected to Piazza Tirana, where a ramp starts to wound on itself slowly until it gets the bridge’s height, creating a compact space underneath that works as a playground, a small basket field and a terraced steps. A similar ramp is provided between via Ludovico il Moro and via Martinelli. The plot for this part of the project is a former agricultural field, still defined by the back of surrounding buildings. In order to adapt to the rural nature of the context the ramp, even if similar in shape to Piazza Tirana’s one, disperses its path in the green once it gets to the ground. Small functions such as a bar, a public transportation ticket office and a flower shop are set under the ramp. Two parallel reticular bridges connects those two ramps with the above mention circular core and, eventually, to the new underground station and to the new linear park.
